South Africa takes the lead against Israel
"No great power has had the courage to do what South Africa is doing now." - Geoffrey Nice, human rights lawyer.
Al Jazeera reports that “South Africa has filed a case at the UN's International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide. The petition accuses Israel of calculated actions intended to bring about the physical destruction of Palestine.”
Last month, South Africa’s Parliament voted to sever its relationship with Israel and close its embassy in Pretoria. Those decisions await final approval from President Cyril Ramaphosa.
These are tumultuous times with the Rand losing 7.5% in 2023, and elections to be held within the next 8 months. By taking a moral and logical stance, South Africa must consider the possibility that the USA will hurts its economy. It’s possible that this is doubles as a step away from the West towards China and Russia.
The situation reminds me of an article I wrote and meant to publish months ago, about the USA Congress manipulating South Africa. Ironically, I never posted it because the Gaza War grabbed the headlines, and I wanted to be sure it got attention. I will update it and post within the next two weeks.
I'm so grateful to South Africa for taking this action.
Bravo SA.
Odds are the US will indeed go dirty on the economy. It’d be a really interesting year long series of articles, like 6 articles across the year tracking policy change, tariffs etc and their resulting impact. Nudge nudge.
