Well, I'm still hoping, 'cause that's all I can do. They've already made a few good decisions.

How was he chosen? With all of the foreign meddling only time will tell if he's a good choice.

There are no good guys, so all we can settle for is the least worst guys getting power.

I am much more pessimistic about the situation in Syria. Over the past two days there have been extensive military actions by Israel, United States, Turkey, Kurds and Russia. Syria is sliding into a pit like Yugoslavia after President Tito's death. Factions will be at war within Syria. The Islamist groups that have taken power are already began fighting. There was never any long term unity among the groups. Israel is establishing a launching pad for military actions against Iran. None of Russia's military bases and naval port have been touched. Turkey is still launching military raids against the Kurds. United States is supporting Israeli military actions in Syria and have launched their own raids against ISIS positions. The so-called liberalism of the new government has already begun to collapse with Sharia law actions against women have begun. Requirements to wear hijabs and in some areas burkas are being mandated despite less then three days proclaiming a new era of freedom for women. Syria is becoming a playground for the machinations of outside powers which is what destroyed Yugoslavia.

Facts have made me pessimistic, and I've not lost that here, but I would love to be proven wrong. There's zero chance of a perfect situation for Syria. None of the background of the players suggest a "messiah". Paradise would be less people in prison, women with rights, and municipal services working. That is my hope. Geopolitically, Israel's 300 strikes, and the destruction of Syria's small never-a-threat navy, is, of course, disturbing but not unexpected. My wish is that it creates new enemies, and backfires on them in the long-run.
